Our Mission

Seeking first the reign of God's ways in the world, it is the purpose of the Community Christian Church through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to share the good news of Christ's redeeming love in such a way that the human family might be made whole; to welcome all people into our midst for worship, nurture, and Christian fellowship; to minister - through sharing and caring - to the needs of others in their human predicament.

Our Beliefs

Regarding beliefs and/or "doctrines," Community, like other congregations within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a non-creedal church. The watchword for our denomination (since its beginnings on the American frontier in the first third of the nineteenth century) has been "No Creed but Christ." As an example of what we believe, we ask converts one simple question: [less]

"Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God and do you accept Him as your Lord and Savior?" Disciples of Christ congregations, both among themselves and within each congregation, hold to a wide variety of beliefs. But there is uniformity in our commonly held belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of the Living God, and offers saving grace to all. Furthermore, we believe that all persons are God's children.

Common Disciples of Christ beliefs and Practices

Time honored traditions honored at Community Christian Church of Kansas City

  • Open Communion. The Lords Supper, or Communion is celebrated in weekly worship.
  • "Believer's Baptism" which is by immersion. Although Disciples practice baptism by immersion, other baptism traditions are honored among those who wish to become members by transfer. We joyfully (and frequently!) celebrate "Parent-Child Dedications" for infants and young children.
  • Freedom of belief. Disciples are called together around one essential of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit study and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.
  • Belief in the oneness of the church. All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service.
  • The ministry of believers. Both ordained clergy and lay persons lead in worship, service and spiritual growth.

Our Commitment

Transforming Lives by Connecting the Unconnected, Reconnecting the Disconnected, Deepening the Committed, In the Community of Christ's Love

Our Spirit

Community Christian Church is progressive in thought. Members are accorded the freedom of individual discernment. There is no attempt to dictate belief in any one Biblical interpretation or theological perspective. No one is asked to subscribe to a particular set of rules for Christian conduct. Every member is granted the right and encouraged to follow the dictates and guidance of a Christian conscience.[less -]

Because of Community's spirit, people of varying beliefs and religious backgrounds are excited to find a welcoming fellowship within its membership. We strive in good will to strengthen understanding, trust, joy, cooperation, loving compassion, and discipleship among ourselves and all Christian believers. We seek a religious faith that is hopeful, joyful, intelligent, relevant, and vital for living in a changing world.
